Christina Applegate Is the Latest Celebrity To Reveal an MS Diagnosis

Actress Christina Applegate announced on Aug. 10 that she’d been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) several months prior. While indicating that her diagnosis had been part of a “strange journey,” she emphasized that she felt supported by other people who are living with the condition.

Applegate has shared her health issues publicly in the past: She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and subsequently underwent a double mastectomy as part of her treatment journey. She also had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed due to her family history of gynecological cancer, and she adopted several lifestyle changes, including clean eating and reducing her stress levels.

Applegate is the most recent celebrity to announce an MS diagnosis, but she’s certainly not alone. Others have also revealed that they are living with multiple sclerosis over the years, bringing awareness to the condition.

For instance, reality television star Jack Osbourne was diagnosed with MS in 2012. He went on to establish the “You Don’t Know Jack About MS” series, a video campaign dispelling myths and revealing truths about the disease. He told the “Today Show” that his diagnosis has the silver lining of making him more productive. “I hate wasting days,” he said. “I'm always doing something and trying to accomplish something, whether it's work, something social, or doing something active. So for that, I'm appreciative of it."

Selma Blair is another public figure who lives with multiple sclerosis. Diagnosed in 2018, the actress said she’d actually been dealing with MS symptoms for years before her official diagnosis. Blair has spoken openly about her journey, which has included speech issues and trouble walking. She has shared frank posts on social media about life with a cane and getting back into a routine post-diagnosis with hobbies such as horseback riding.

Former talk show host Montel Williams also lives with MS. He attributes his continuing good health to sticking with his treatment plan, staying active, and maintaining a healthy diet. Initially diagnosed in 1999, he has increased his intake of fruits and vegetables and worked to reduce inflammation in his body.

Although Applegate isn’t the first celebrity to announce an MS diagnosis, she is part of a community of people living with the disease, and she intends to fight it. “As one of my friends that has MS said, ‘We wake up and take the indicated action,’” she wrote on Twitter. “And that’s what I do. So now I ask for privacy as I go through this thing.”
